چکیده

Introduction: Ca-Fe and alkali-halide alteration of CAIs is often attributed to aqueous alteration by fluids circulating on asteroidal parent bodies after the various chondritic components have been assembled, although debate continues about the roles of asteroidal vs. nebular modification processes [1-7]. Here we report detailed observations of alteration products in a large Type B2 CAI, TS4 from Allende, one of the oxidized subgroup of CV3s, and propose a speculative model for aqueous alteration of CAIs in a nebular setting. Ca-Fe alteration in this CAI consists predominantly of end-member hedenbergite, end-member andradite, and compositionally variable, magnesian high-Ca pyroxene. These phases are strongly concentrated in an unusual “nodule” enclosed within the interior of the CAI (Fig. 1). The Ca, Fe-rich nodule superficially resembles a clast that pre-dated and was engulfed by the CAI, but closer inspection shows that relic spinel grains are enclosed in the nodule, and corroded CAI primary phases interfinger with the Fe-rich phases at the nodule’s margins. This CAI also contains abundant sodalite and nepheline (alkali-halide) alteration that occurs around the rims of the CAI, but also penetrates more deeply into the CAI. The two types of alteration (Ca-Fe and alkali-halide) are adjacent, and very finegrained Fe-rich phases are associated with sodalite-rich regions. Both types of alteration appear to be replacive; if that is true, it would require substantial introduction of Fe, and transport of elements (Ti, Al and Mg) out of the nodule, and introduction of Na and Cl into alkalihalide rich zones. Parts of the CAI have been extensively metasomatized.

Oxygen Isotopic Composition of Ca-fe-rich Silicates in and around an Allende

Introduction: Most components of CV chondrites show variable degrees of late-stage alteration resulting in the modification of preexisting mineral assemblages and/or in the formation of new minerals. The conditions and environment under which these processes occurred are highly debated, with arguments in favor of solar nebular as well as asteroidal settings [1]. In the particular case of calciu...

Cl, Al AND OXYGEN ISOTOPES IN AN ALLENDE CAI: IMPLICATIONS FOR SECONDARY ALTERATION IN THE EARLY SOLAR

Introduction: Ca-Al-rich inclusions (CAIs) from Allende usually have secondary alteration phases such as anorthite, grossular, sodalite, and nepheline [1-3]. Although these phases are considered to have been formed by relatively low temperature reactions between CAIs and a surrounding nebular gas [1, 2], it is not well known that when such processes occurred. 36 Cl-36 S and

Calculation of Mass Transfer and Element Mobility During the Hydrothermal Alteration in the Sungun PORPHYRY Copper Deposit Iran

The Sungun porphyry copper deposit is located in northwestern Iran and is associated with diorite/granodiorite to quartz-monzonite of Miocene age, which intruded Eocene volcanosedimentary and Cretaceous carbonate rocks. Copper mineralization was accompanied by both potassic and phyllic alteration. Three main mineralization related alteration episodes (potassic, transition, and phyllic alteratio...

Composition of matrix in the CR chondrite LAP 02342

We report evidence of interchondrule matrix heterogeneity on a scale of 50 lm in the well-preserved CR2 chondrite LAP 02342. Despite minor effects resulting from asteroidal aqueous alteration, the matrix in this CR chondrite seems to preserve much of the compositional record of nebular fines. We carried out electron-microprobe studies using a 3-lm-diameter beam; we analyzed 10 elements in 36or ...

Hibonite-(Fe), (Fe,Mg)Al12O19, a new alteration mineral from the Allende meteorite

Hibonite-(Fe), (Fe,Mg)Al12O19, is the Fe2+-dominant analog of hibonite CaAl12O19, discovered in a highly altered Ca-,Al-rich refractory inclusion from the Allende meteorite. It occurs as scattered micrometer-sized single crystals within an aggregate of hercynite (Fe,Mg)Al2O4, adjacent to nepheline, ilmenite, ferroan spinel, perovskite, and hibonite. The mean chemical composition determined by e...
